Intellectual Conversation

Here’s an email exchange with a guy who found my profile on Match:

From him (no subject, but signed with his name):

Liked the part about the intellectual conversation. Not many women with looks who are into that.

My first reply (question refers to his choice of headline):

Oh, I’m more into the conversation than my looks – which is probably even more rare, I imagine. :)

So, what exactly were you born 100 years too late for?

His reply (which included his phone number and hotmail address):

Wellll the 100 years thing is my way of expressing that the world is too much of a safe place. And what I mean by THAT is my idea of living on the edge is not some instructor holding on to me on my first skydiving lesson on the way down, or a guided tour of something that someone made to make money off me or standing around a turnout vista while 30 oriental tourists are snapping pics. There’s nothing left to explore, there’s no freedom, no REAL freedom, like just going off into an unchartered territory. World is too tame.

Thoughts?

My reply (which took a few days since I was irritated by his reference to the “oriental” tourists – who still uses that adjective in this politically correct era?):

Hmmm. Well if none of those things fit your idea of living on the edge, then what does? :)

His answer:

Great sex ;)

Huh? Is he serious? How is having great sex “living on the edge”?

Or is this just the typical case of a guy who’s only looking for a hookup, and so he’s bringing sex into the convo as quickly as possible?

Either way, I’m already turned off to him, and so I don’t know how/if to reply. I’m just that fickle, I guess.

Ok Girl,
Firstly i love this blog. I love your so called bitchiness …. I think its sassy and hot. lol

Neways getting to this email with this dude … who clearly you need to through off the nearest bridge.

Firstly he is basically saying that he sees no excitement in life. I mean has be gone skydiving, or hiking or whatever.

You know that would be have good if he said the same thing and then ended it with … life is really about pushing your limits, doing things you have never done before and experiencing life to its fullest.

But he seems to see the glass as half empty as opposed to half full.

In regards to the sex thing? Yeh well sure it can be amazing .. but if he thinks thats all that life can offer then he needs to get a life.

I say ditch him. You can get better.

You’re not bitchy. You’re bored.

You have a hard time connecting with guys on your level because you spend too much time up in your head. I have the same problem. I can’t turn off this brain. It’s full of thoughts and comments and desires and hauntings, all things that I’ve (here in Chicago) had to restrain for so much of my life. That’s me.

You’re the same.

I know this. You know this. Let’s discuss.

@Eric: Yeah, I’m not bitchy the same way you’re not presumptuous. ;-)

But yes, my brain is full, and just Won’t. Shut. Up. So full of ideas and thoughts that I can’t focus on any single one of them long enough to write more frequently.

And yes, I’m bored. But, is it boredom with men, or just boredom with trying to convince myself that I really want one around for longer than a fortnight?

The older I get, and the more settled into my life that I become, the more ambivalence I have about what kind of relationship (if any) I’m actually seeking out. And not knowing what you want is the surest route to never getting it.

Easy tiger. There’s a difference between presumptuous and properly reading people. I don’t claim to be a guru but I’ve got a pretty well-honed people-dar. Presumption implies a propensity for wrongness, and that ain’t me. At least fifty-one percent of the time I’m right, sometimes more, and that’s good enough for me.

Sometines I wonder how this brain of mine made it past the genetic roadblocks of evolution, surely too much thinking and contemplating couldn’t have been useful in a world of a fast-attack tigers and tree-sized sloths, but maybe it was us smart apes that tricked the dopes into being sloth snacks and therefore cleaned up with the … See! There I go again.

Seems that most of us operate at the reptile level, and I am no exception, just that this moon-pondering mind has proven itself to be too much a deficit. I’ve been lately experimenting with not letting it be so. Which is why you’re reading these words.

I can’t tell you if you’re bored with men. Boredom is a deeper condition than that. Boredom is the condition we suffer between bouts of excitement, right?

Some forms of excitement last longer than a fortnight, some last less.

I have more thoughts, but they will wait.

i understand what he means about not being able to easily explore the world… he’s so pessimistic about it. i’ve never met a ‘extreme’ sports/adventurer type that actually came up with ‘an intellectual’ tagline for why they didn’t get off their arse & go find something new to discover. seems kinda fake to me.
and speaking of fake, his “looker with brains” line loses it’s sparkle when he follows it with a slightly classier version of “wanna fcuk?” and by slightly classier, i mean not so much.
i hope you share your reply because i’m sure it will be smart & sassy…
